Conference Objectives

The objectives of the ANZA-SIDM Improving Diagnosis Conference are to:

To bring diagnostic safety, quality, efficiency and excellence to the forefront of patient safety in Australia and New Zealand. 

To bring together thought leaders to share advances in medical education, clinical reasoning, research and real world practice improvements that can be used to optimise diagnostic quality and safety. 

To engage patients, carers, clinicians from all disciplines, researchers, educators, and other stakeholders in understanding and improving the diagnostic process. 

To promote shared decision making in the diagnostic process and increase patient understanding of their crucial role as co-producers of safer diagnosis 

To emphasise the role of teamwork, communication and reassessment in decreasing vulnerability to diagnostic error. 

To acknowledge the expanding role of digital health in diagnosis including clinical decision making and communication 

To build a community of primary, secondary and tertiary care practitioners dedicated to accurate, timely and well communicated diagnosis.   

To increase awareness of the uncertainty inherent in all steps in the diagnostic process, and learn to openly acknowledge that diagnosis is a complex, iterative task that often requires multiple perspectives and opinions. 

To promote monitoring, measuring and quality improvement in the diagnostic process, including reporting of diagnostic error and development of preventative strategies
